  • 4-5 pounds chicken. Select the pieces according to your preference, skin-on.

  • Olive oil or vegetable oil (as per preference)
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce (can be store-bought or homemade)

Cook Time: 45-50 minutes

Step 1:

Make sure that your grill is ready. In order to ensure that your chicken isn’t over charred or undercooked, keep a cool side on one end of your grill. This cooler side with no coals below it will be used to completely cook the chicken without overcooking it.

Step 2:

If your barbecue sauce is store-bought, then make sure you dilute it a little. This will help us in coating the chicken pieces consistently.

Step 3:

Coat the chicken pieces with olive oil and sprinkle salt and pepper over them, according to taste.

Step 4:

Put the chicken pieces directly over the coal and brush it with the diluted barbecue sauce. Turn the sides of the chicken every 5 minutes. Grill the chicken uncovered for around 5-10 minutes.

Step 5:

Once you observe a good amount of sear on one side, then shift the chicken pieces to the cooler side of the grill.

Step 6:

Turn the chicken pieces over and baste again with barbecue sauce. Cook for another 10 minutes and cover the grill. Remove the chicken and serve it into a plate.

Serving Suggestions: Once taken off the grill, the barbecued chicken can be served in many ways. Serve it with a potato salad along with a fresh green salad on the side.You can also serve it as a sandwich by adding lettuce, and some juicy tomatoes in the middle.


Things To Keep in Mind For The Perfect Barbecue Chicken

  • Size Matters

Different pieces of chicken take different amounts of time to cook. The obvious tip is, bigger the zie, the more time it takes to cook. Moreover, always keep it in mind that bone-in chicken takes more time to cook than boneless chicken pieces.

  • Cheer the sear

The sear is the epitome of the perfectly grilled barbecue chicken. The sear marks add to the smoky taste of the barbecued chicken. In order to get the perfect sear on your chicken, make sure that it does not have much moisture. Towel pat the chicken to absorb all the moisture from the chicken piece. 

Moreover, preheat the barbecue and oil the grates so that your perfect chicken piece does not stick.

  • Shut Down The Lid

Now we know that you might be wanting to check on the chicken again and again, but don’t. Opening the lid, again and again, makes the heat escape from the barbecue. This will lead to the chicken cooked unevenly. 

Keep the lid closed so the heat stays in the barbecue and gives you a more evenly cooked juicy chicken.

  • Save The Sauce

Make sure that you save the barbecue sauce fro the end. Most of the store-bought barbecue sauces tend to have high sugar content, due to which they might burn on the grill if applied too early. Apply the sauce ten minutes before the cooking is completed. Add more of it once it’s taken off the grill and served.

  • Don’t Gorge On It

After the chicken is taken off the grill, make sure you let it rest. Why? Because this allows the chicken to soak up the sauce and all the flavours. Cutting it right away might lead to the chicken all the flavours and the juice might not distribute evenly through the meat.

  • Weather Check

Don’t keep on guessing if the chicken has cooked or not. Instead of looking and guessing make sure you use a meat thermometer. A perfectly cooked chicken should reach a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Room Temperature

Don’t slap the chicken right on the grill from the freezer. In order to ensure that the chicken is cooked evenly and is seared evenly, bring the chicken to the room temperature. This will give you a properly cooked chicken all around.
